Represented by the masterpiece of the sculptor Giglioli, the Glières plateau is the symbol of the Resistance in Haute-Savoie. It is here that nearly 500 resistance fighters gathered to receive the Allied airdrops during the winter of 1944.
Nowadays, Les Glières is a popular nordic ski area! Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are the main activities of the plateau in winter, with 36 km of trails. The resort allows a change of scenery guaranteed without the worries of large estates (free parking, no stop, no toll ...).
A sports activity spot
The 3rd Sunday of March runs the Glières cross-country skiing marathon. An essential spring stopover that takes place in a sumptuous setting. In 2019, this Nordic marathon brought together nearly 760 participants from all over France and abroad.
In the summer, you can enjoy walks in the alpine pastures, see also speleoglogies in about 15 caves more than 100m underground. For cyclists, climbing the Col des Glières is possible by bike from the west or east slopes.
It is also a sensitive and protected natural area, a place of cheese production of emblematic quality of the region with reblochon and tomme.
How to access Glières?
Located northeast of Annecy, 29 km from La Roche-sur-Foron and 15 km from Thorens-Glières, the plateau is located in the municipalities of Petit-Bornand-les-Glières and Thorens-Glières, at 1450 meters of altitude.
The plateau offers a splendid panorama of the Aravis, and its rather soft relief, contrasts with the abrupt mountains of the surroundings.
